The Unpopularity of Thanksgiving Day in China

Presumably many people have noticed one thing - This Thanksgiving Day was gone quietly though now numerous Chinese consider celebrating western festivals as a fashionable lifestyle. Few shops were engaged in sales promotion at this time on a large scale even in Beijing with a dense consumption atmosphere in festivals. In addition, the topics about Thanksgiving Day were also few and far between on the social platform like Microblog and Wechat. Why is the grand festival celebrated by the whole country totally unpopular in China which nearly will not miss any “western festival”?

A rather reliable thought is to seek for an explanation from the perspective of cultural origin and religious custom. However, I think that this reason finds it hard to justify itself. The reason is simple. Chinese seldom really consider the cultural and religious factors behind festivals when celebrating “western festivals” which will be popular once they can make a stunt for revelry. In fact, Christmas is also a typical religious festival, but it still turns into a popular “western festival” which is favored by Chinese youth.

Analyzing why a festival is popular or unpopular can most enlighten us how to get out of the crisis of traditional festivals. On the one hand, the reason why Thanksgiving Day loses its glamour in China is that it fails to satisfy the shopping demand of Chinese consumers. It is also an important reason why Chinese traditional festivals like Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-autumn Festival decline day by day. At present, many people sniff at the phenomenon of “the transformation of festivals into shopping day”. Actually from a different perspective, several big festivals of western society are the prime time for shops to carry out promotion campaigns. Why can’t binge festival consumption be a new festive tradition?

Having experienced more than 300 years’ inheritance and continuation in American, Thanksgiving Day is still very spirited, which should also be learned by Chinese traditional festivals. Thanksgiving Day is not “a manmade festival”, but a cultural tradition which completely integrates into American people. The contribution of such a festival can not be neglected in the aspect of enhancing the cultural identity of the public. Chinese traditional festivals may as well learn from those “western festivals”.
