Meaning:
The name digitalis comes from the Latin word for "finger," The flower got its informal name from the legend that fairies gave these blossoms to the foxes to wear on their claws for gloves, so they would not get caught when raiding the chicken coop. Foxgloves are symbolic of insincerity.
Note:
The entire plant is poisonous. However, the dried leaves are used in the production of digitalis, an important cardiovascular medicine.
Growing Tip:
Most varieties of foxglove only have blossoms on one side of the stem. Because of this and height considerations, foxgloves are best grown against a wall or some type of background. If this flower is happy where it is planted, it will return year after year, but its temperamental nature makes it a little unpredictable. Foxgloves prefer partial shade. These plants bloom in late spring to early summer and can be fooled to bloom again in the fall. See flower growing tip, 16.
Other:
Foxglove flowers have very thick, dense stems, so they need to be recut often to prevent stem blockage. See also flower care tips, 24 and 29.
