Difference between China and Western Countries at Christmas
It is a little inconceivable that Christmas prevails in China. As far as I know, the majority of Chinese do not believe in Christianity. In addition, the concept of traditional Chinese festivals among young people is gradually fading away. Even in the most important Spring Festival, people tend to spend less time in going home and reuniting with their relatives.
Globalization not only promotes international business and trade contacts, but also exerts an influence on the traditions and customs of people in various countries and regions to varying degrees. Taking American catering as an example, every city in America has Chinese restaurants. I believe that every American has ever had a Chinese meal before. Additionally, the restaurants with the tastes of Italy, Greece, and Thailand, Mexico or other countries are scattered across America.
Just as Americans accept catering culture around the world, the young generation of China is also absorbing western culture. For instance, they are enthusiastic about celebrating western festivals like Christmas and Valentine's Day.
Everything will change due to the change of time and space. Of course, culture is not an exception. In particular, culture will change its true feature when it needs to integrate into another culture. For example, Chinese food sold in America is different from that in China in the aspect of taste. The reason is that it has to adapt to the taste of Americans. Similarly, Chinese celebrate western festivals in a different way from Americans’ traditional ways of celebration according to my personal experience in China.
At present, the western festivals Chinese are wild about celebrating include Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving Day, etc. The young generation of Chinese has conducted the localized transformation of these festivals and considers them as an opportunity to get together with their friends.
Festivals are an aspect of culture while culture is constantly changing with the movement of the world. Each time we celebrate a festival, we are helping to continue the traditional festival consciously or unconsciously or change it to keep pace with the times. People’s appearance will change as they grow older. As well, people will have different life experiences. In the meanwhile, the change of culture and traditions should be taken for granted. With increasingly close connection of the world, cultural traditions have also turned into one of shared resources for various countries in the world. Foreign cultures will inevitably need to adjust themselves to adapt to the new environment if they wants to take root somewhere.
