Varieties:
There are about 250 species of delphiniums. The most common are the large hybrid varieties known as English hybrids or Delphinium elatum and the smaller Belladonna varieties, or Delphinium gran-diflorum.
Colors:
Predominantly shades of blue, violet, purple, and white.There is a rarer red-and-yellow variety. The hybrid varieties
are available in blue and purple shades, but also in creams and pale pink. Delphiniums have dark or white small flower centers known as "bees."

Freshness:
Three-fourths of the blossoms are open, with just a few buds on the tip of the flower. Delphiniums in total bud will not fully open after being cut.

5 to 7 days.

All year, but the best season is early summer into fall.

Meaning:
The name delphinium is from the Greek word delphis, meaning dolphin, the buds being said to resemble a dolphin's snout.

Arranging Tip:
Delphinium flowers are perfect for casual, airy garden bouquets, their tail spikes adding height They can also be cut apart two to three times and used in more formal, full bouquets tucked in and around other flowers. See also flower arranging tips, 13, 15, and 16.
Growing Tip:
The tall, majestic English hybrids or Pacific giant hybrids are called the "Queen of the border," sometimes reaching up to eight feet. These plants are perfect for the back of the garden, Delphiniums prefer the sunny locations, and are heavy feeders and drinkers. They thrive in cool, moist climates but also in areas with severe winters that reach as cold as 30 degrees below zero. Delphiniums bloom in early summer, but can be manipulated to bloom again in the fall. They are classified as perennials, but lose their vigor after about four or five years and must be replaced. Stake delphiniums as the bloom stalks develop, as they can easily break when the first wind comes along. See flower growing tip, 16.
