The most common variety and the best for cut flowers is Cosmos bipinnatus. Single and double varieties are available, as well as the more unusual variety known as chocolate cosmos or Cosmos atrosanguineus,

None, except for the chocolate variety.
Freshness:
Purchase or cut when the flowers have just started to open but the petals are not completely lying flat.The buds will also open after they are cut.
Vase Life:
3 to 5 days. When cosmos are cut from the source, they can last 10 days or longer.

The middle of summer to fall.
Cost:
Inexpensive. The chocolate variety - moderately priced.

Growing Tip:
Few plants grow as rapidly as cosmos flowers. Seeds can be sown directly into the soil after the danger of frost is over, and will produce many blossoms from midsummer to the first frost.
